The Midnight Train to Farnham

Oxford Street at night, swing dancing at the 100 club and falling asleep on the train, after having paid for a ticket that no one collected. Monday night, in a nutshell.

I should actually go back to Oxford Street when I am not in a terrible rush because the window displays are actually really really cool and artsy/designy. Blurred pics are the results of my haste, although some of them are still pretty cool.

Sort of a low weekend

Haven’t posted any photos from the past few days, largely because I haven’t taken any. I opted not to attend the past few events on campus, money is part of it, but also, I just needed to catch up on some sleep. Been sleeping a lot.

Went to train with Farnham Rugby on Thursday, played a full game on Saturday. We lost, and it rained. So basically it was a crappy day all in all. Sunday was a great day weatherwise and we trained with the Surrey Institute team. Monday is gloomy.

The bank sent my atm card to Maplewood. I had to call and cancel it and request a new one – so basically I’m still doing the bank account shuffle. The dollar is down against the pound, Kerry is down against Bush (according to all right-wing media). My clients decide to be funny and use MS frontpage, which in a roundabout way undermines my work.

So basically its a slump. But I’m going swing dancing tonight. Spending a lot of money, but I need to.

Egg Drop and Karaoke

BA Graphic Communication students held an egg drop challenge. Why didn’t anyone tell me? I would have been all over it! I have the feeling that weren’t any parameters though, some people had a huge parachute, others just a lump of something. Either, way, it was fun to watch.

Karaoke night at the Union. Paul McCartney, eat your heart out. And yes, that guy has a mullet.

Moment of the night, Larry singing “Any Dream Will Do” and the entire room filling in the backup vocals, as if they had been rehearsing all day. Ah Ah Ah.

Random Farnham

On a walkabout in Farnham, photos of nothing in particular, except that cat who happened to lick it’s lips just as I took the photo.

Looks like I spoke too soon, guess who’s coming to Farnham? I can’t say I am surprised, their globalisation effort is second only to that McDonald’s (please let that not be a jinx). Plus, you-know-whats is really quite posh and having one in the town makes it an official fancy town. Note: Millburn and South Orange both have one, but Maplewood does not. The good thing about it is that most of their restaurants have wi-fi and stay open pretty late. Plus its near campus and students will hang out there. If I were the owner of one of the other numerous coffee shops in town I would be fuming, their overpriced crap is placed so close the school and right outside the supermarket. Man, that’s gotta suck.

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, check out the last picture. I literally stopped dead in my tracks and gasped when I saw that sign.

Skool Disco

In a moment of complete foolishness, I forgot to charge my battery before heading out to the first school-wide social event of the year, Skool Disco. This is the one party where people really dress up and since its the start of term, everyone goes nuts for no apparent reason. And the funny thing is, all the alcohol is perfectly legal, the school runs the bar and encourages we have a good time. I would have to be the one person who is not yet 18.

Although I don’t have the pictures to fully back it up, it was a mad time. I swear, I don’t usually take off my pants in public, but I did win a bottle of champagne … make up your own details for that story.

One man’s rubbish…

The Aldershot Car Boot Sale. No matter how I try, I cannot say that fast. Not a bad collection of other people’s rubbish. Mostly outdated videos and baby clothes, but I managed for find a nice leather jacket and some swing CDs.

The Freshers moved in today, at least most of them. Our house is nearly filled the addition of another American and a Chinese, both doing MA programmes.

Fireworks over Farnham

For some reason, fireworks were being sent up. And there were a lot of drunk folks, especially the Wardens.

Farnham Castle

I often get asked “why did I come to the UK?”, and it’s usually more like “What the Hell are you doing in this shit town called Farnham?”. If I am feeling whimsical, I might say “Well, America doesn’t have any castles.”

Built in the 12th century by the Bishop of Winchester. Besieged, sold, rebuilt, turned into a park … standard really.

The Hop Blossom, Farnham

Just hittin’ the pub, foolin’ around, you know… university life.

Words that don’t exist in British:
faucet
alphabetize
sidewalk
stove

So, check out that driver’s license from Norway… crazy stuff.
