Life in the Bal-ance

Out for a night of swing dancing, this time of the Balboa persuasion. I’ve never been formally introduced to Bal, just kinda picked it up over the years. I suppose it never became so apparent how much I have yet to learn than in the company of some of the country’s best Bal dancers and instructors. Still, a night of practice helped quite a bit.

Check out some of the vids from that night including Paul and Jenn, the winners of the the little contest thing.

Fighting the Crowds

There are many strange traditions in New York, and last year began a new one, the Annual New York City Pillow Fight. This year’s was the second consecutive year that Union Square was ‘stuffed’ with pillow-packing people ready to brawl.

It didn’t take long for the feathers to fly, it seems that this crowd of young, mostly-students and downtowners had a lot of pent up rage, for some reason. Maybe it’s the cost of tuition, or maybe it finding a way to spend that $1000/week allowance from daddy.

As you can see from the videos, it was quite an affair with no shortage of police/authorities and amateur press. I was alerted to the story from Rocketboom’s Friday episode, and on their Saturday show, I actually found myself in the frame.

I [heart] Trivia

Since I don’t have a Valentine, I figure I can fill the place in heart by going down the pub and playing trivia. Didn’t work.

Keith and the Girl sponsored a little game of trivia at Pete’s Candy Store here in Williamsburg. Keith and Chemda turned up, as did Patrice, Matt B, Spooky, Dee, Jess and Bret+Becca, whom I had never even heard of.

In spite of the snow and cold, it was a fun night. We ended up at Planet Thailand here on N.7th St. and of course I didn’t make it home until midnight. But compared to most of my Valentine’s Days, it was aaalriight.

Nerd Nightlife

The first meeting of the New York Diggnation Meetup Group took place tonight. Let me summarise:

A bunch of geeks gather in a theatre in the East Village to watch a re-run of an internet TV show on a big screen. And then eat pizza and beer. Big deal! It was written about on Forbes.com

But the way we [geeks] measure social lives, this was a fun night out. Got to mingle, laugh, make fun, and just quiz each other on all things geeky. Very much a I-thought-I-was-the-only-one-who-did-that sort of night.

And there were even girls in attendance. Although, only a few.

Everybody hates February

Jessica decided a few weeks ago that we ‘needed’ to have a dinner party to try and cope with the fact that everyone hates February. Because of the timing, the night turned out to be a bit more celebratory and for Jessica it marked her finding a new job. Either way, it was a night in.

I called up Ariel, who I hadn’t seen in quite some time, and we headed over to Hoboken to meet with Laura and Alicia and Jess and eat some home-cooked food. And dessert. Lots of dessert.

I made rice and beans, of course.
