Nick Hornby and Josh Rouse
You know you’re in New York when a book signing and lecture has hired security personnel.

I wish I had known about this event sooner — Nick Hornby, author of such neo-classics as “About a Boy” and “Hi-Fidelity”, appeared at the Union Square Barnes & Noble to read from and sign his new book, “Slam“. Of course the reason I turned up was to see my old pal Josh Rouse.
Nick chose to appear with Josh. in Nick’s words, his stories are to be read like songs, and of course Josh’s music tells incredible stories.
If only I had a seat, I might have stayed past an hour.

Rooftop Camping
I didn’t go camping this weekend with the fellas. It had a lot do with logistics — traveling to Maplewood, running, etc. But I did attend Jessica’s Oktoberfest, which took place on her Hoboken rooftop deck.
Considering how we sat around a campfire eating s’mores and drinking, it felt an awful lot like camping. Not the usual rabble, but a fun night of low-impact conversation and laughter. Good times.

Piano Night
I think New York would be a kinder, gentler place if there were more Piano Bars around the City. Tonight, I found myself at Rita Mae’s Piano Bar in the West Village to bid adieu to Meaghan Hislop, who is off to the Caribbean to pursue a life of adventure on the high seas. The old gang was all there, Hannah, Kendra, and Tom D., who I haven’t since, what, 1999?
Meg and I sat down and recorded and episode of twentyhood. Head over and listen. »
