Wings 2008

For the third straight year we assembled at Jay’s place for Wingsfest or The Wings of Love or whatever he’s calling it. It was fun. Food, and then Rock Band. Nothing brings friends together like video games, music, and the necessary alcohol required to go crazy singing “My Sharona.”

I wish I saw more of my old friends, those Jersey-dwelling scoundrels. Although, as years go by it does become increasingly lonely as a sole bachelor in the room. I mean, since when do girlfriends eat wings anyway? I think you’re just rubbing it in.

Jonathan Coulton

I went to see Jonathan Coulton. He’s awesome. Don’t know who he is? Better ask somebody.

Sing Sing Sing

Sing Sing is a crammed little ghetto-ass karaoke joint in the East Village. On this night, I found myself in one of the tiny private rooms with a dozen or so new-found friends from the local NY Tech scene. Not bad for a Friday.

The 74-hour Podcast

When a friend tells me he’s going to be broadcasting live on the Internet for 72 straight hours, it’s part of my bizarre duty to turn up for a few hours and lighten the load. Turns out they powered through to 74, setting a new record and raising money for Asperger’s syndrome research.

This weekend, I went to meet with Keith and Chemda to be a guest on the Keith and The Girl show. After about 12 hours on broadcasting live, I staggered home on the G train and reflected on how I no longer have the ability to pull all-nighters (if I ever did).

If you have 74 hours to kill, the entire podcast can be downloaded here ยป

Niar Etalocohc

I thought, what would it sound like you played “Chocolate Rain” backwards. Luckily, the Internet is filled with people who think like me…

Oh lord.

Internet Week 2008: Tumblr Party

I don’t usually go out for social time on a Sunday night, but cmon, it’s Internet week. Tonight’s event is a Tumblr/Next New Network party down in that Tribeca-ish area that no one really lays claim to. Side note: when did everything below Houston become Chinatown? WTF.

Tonight’s even was fun. With the music and entertainment provided by a karaoke-style Rock Band exhibition, no one had reasons to complain about the DJ or the overall mood. After all, it was our friends on stage. And to my pleasant surprise, the ratios of male-to-female weren’t of the usual skew.

Made some friends, passed out some business cards, took some photos. Not bad for a Sunday night.

Internet Week 2008: Totally Rad Show meetup

I try my hardest to avoid Times Square and that whole touristy rat run between the Port Authority and Bryant Park, but today we found ourselves at Dave & Busters on 42nd St. to meetup with the fellas from the Totally Rad Show.

This event was low key, a nice subtle afternoon of gathering around three ordinary men and listening to what they have to say as if they are some sort of experts on everything. Fandom is a strange phenomenon.

Before I left, I had to jump in and steal a photo with Alex Albrecht. I guess I am a fan after all …

Internet Week 2008: Rocketboom Party

Luckily, I didn’t have to travel too far for tonight’s festivities. After rugby, and appropriate showering, I walked over to Savalas on Bedford for an evening of cool beats in an air conditioned bar. Not a bad time, although the usual awkwardness of being the sober guy did eventually overtake my desire to make new friends.

Internet Week 2008: Wiimbledon

It’s already becoming a tradition: Wiimbledone is the annual tournament, held at Barcade in Williamsburg, where competitors go head-to-head in Nintendo Wii tennis. What better way to spend a day than playing video games.

And in the tradition of all things Williamsburg, competitors are encouraged to get really into things. Wear costumes, create cheeky team names, be ironic. Mission: accomplished.

Internet Week 2008: Mashable Expo

Out and about once again for Internet Week, this time to the an expo/networking event for Mashable in the Theatre District. Much of the same old crew but also a viable chance to meet some new folks. Wine and cheers were in full effect, and it overall it was a good time … until they turned the music way up and turned the place into a disco. Cmon.
