Reality Bites, especially in Williamsburg

An another move that could certainly be categorised as “good clean fun”, Bonetti and I stepped out to McCarren Park in Williamsburg for an outdoor viewing of the modern-day classic, Reality Bites, which is celebrating its 15 years! Oddly, most of the themes are universal, although the clothing is fast becoming outdated.

Overall, this was a good time. The hipsters were out in droves, but managed to behave themselves. The only complaint I can muster is that we were pitched on the concrete kickball field, and not any sort of grass surface. Not the most picnicky situation, after all.

Oh, and my favourite line from the movie is definitely “I was really going to be somebody by the time I was 23.”

Super Bowl 2009

In what seems to be a semi-annual tradition, we found ourselves once again at Jay and Marco and Jeff’s place in New Brunswick eating wings and watching a massive tv. This time, the Super Bowl was on.

Boo hiss to all the ads that are set in an office. At least 7 by my count.

Panda Party in LIC

Perhaps the one of the more randomly themed parties I’ve attended, but yes, tonight was a Panda Party. Laura W., being ever the lover of all things Asian, decided to host a viewing of Kung-Fu Panda, and the backing of Panda-shaped goodies.

As you can tell, the Rice Krispies Treat Panda collapsed after a while.

Crafty In Guayama

Heading to Guayama for the craft festival of the Ingenious Artisans of Puerto Rico. Or something. I forget the actual name of their organisation.

Guyama is a classic southern plantation town, complete with Spanish-style plaza. Vintage PR right here. Strangely, there is a monument to deceased servicemen of Ohio in the town center. Why not.

Also pictured: improvised and hand-painted signage, vintage art deco movie theatre, and a piƱa colada prepared in an actual pineapple.

Tech Karaoke

Remember how I went and did Karaoke a few weeks ago? Well, this time was much bigger and badder. Koreatown is highly underrated, compared with Chinatown and Little Italy, and other ethnic enclaves in New York, but Karaoke-wise, it’s no joke.

Firstly, we met at Shake Shack, because some folks like waiting in lines. I don’t.

Wings 2008

For the third straight year we assembled at Jay’s place for Wingsfest or The Wings of Love or whatever he’s calling it. It was fun. Food, and then Rock Band. Nothing brings friends together like video games, music, and the necessary alcohol required to go crazy singing “My Sharona.”

I wish I saw more of my old friends, those Jersey-dwelling scoundrels. Although, as years go by it does become increasingly lonely as a sole bachelor in the room. I mean, since when do girlfriends eat wings anyway? I think you’re just rubbing it in.

I went to see Jonathan Coulton. He’s awesome. Don’t know who he is? Better ask somebody.

Sing Sing Sing

Sing Sing is a crammed little ghetto-ass karaoke joint in the East Village. On this night, I found myself in one of the tiny private rooms with a dozen or so new-found friends from the local NY Tech scene. Not bad for a Friday.

Internet Week 2008: Tumblr Party

I don’t usually go out for social time on a Sunday night, but cmon, it’s Internet week. Tonight’s event is a Tumblr/Next New Network party down in that Tribeca-ish area that no one really lays claim to. Side note: when did everything below Houston become Chinatown? WTF.

Tonight’s even was fun. With the music and entertainment provided by a karaoke-style Rock Band exhibition, no one had reasons to complain about the DJ or the overall mood. After all, it was our friends on stage. And to my pleasant surprise, the ratios of male-to-female weren’t of the usual skew.

Made some friends, passed out some business cards, took some photos. Not bad for a Sunday night.
