Balneario de Carolina

With the cousins in Carolina for some beach fun and wackiness. Javier, Pito, and Angel continue to age, as do we, and yet together, they still act like ten-year-olds. Nothing wrong with that.

Isla Verde

Mischa and Gabe arrived a day behind Johanna and me. So we are off to the beach for some much-needed sun, sand, and drinks. The day started, as if often does, in Patillas, with the family piling into our sweaty old car. Hey, it’s gets us around.

Later on, we found ourselves in a typical supermarket, but with a few interesting cereal-based products. Is it just me, or are cereal mascots increasingly bizarre? Half these guys look like they’re on drugs.

Old Photos

Here are some of the many photos in the aforementioned post. These are not very high in quality because I simply snapped a photo of the print itself. No scanners or negatives were involved.

Baba’s House

In Puerto Rico, at my grandparents’ house. And for entertainment, old photo albums with pictures of us children, and my parents, from years ago. Oh, how young we were.

Dinner and Karaoke for my 28th

Once a year, I can harang my old friends into venturing east of the Hudson for an evening out in New York. This year, we headed to dinner at Havana NY before descending on Chorus for Karaoke shenanigans. Good clean fun.

The occasion was my 28th birthday, which technically doesn’t pass until Wednesday the 6th. We missed an organised shindig last year, so it was double-pleasant to see the old gang on my birthday. Thanks for coming out.

This was also the first time that I used Facebook to organise the event. I received something like 18 “maybe” replies, as well as 4 or 5 “yes” replies from people who didn’t show. So in the end I could have just made individual phone calls to all the people I would have expected to come. Shows you who your true friends are, I suppose. Next year, maybe I’ll use Mixergy.com or some other invitation service.

Many photos and videos, so make sure you check out the whole post.

Exhale.

Mission Accomplished

After two years of official and unofficial campaigning, we awake this morning to an America that looks forward to it’s first black President. More than that, we look forward to the change and progress so desperately needed after four years of … well, tyranny, under Bush 43.

I feel as though a huge burden is finally lifted from my shoulders. The weight of the world now falls on Obama, although he’s got a lot of supporters to share the load. With wide-eyed optimism we face the future. The spectre of the past 8 years is all but exorcised. We have a renewed sense of pride.

America is back. And I am, at least for a little while, at peace.

Photos from my voting experience, and the post-announcement celebration at the Cotler house. Charlie was in attendance, as was Johanna and my parents, and many other parents of classmates and other from my +1 generation.

La Playa de Patillas

Amid the mangroves and winding paths is a place where locals can tuck away to a semi-private beach. The Caribbean is calm and welcoming. This is one of the few places where I can tolerate the beach.

Somehow, I didn’t snap any photos of the neighborhood kids who took their horse for a quick swim in the shallows. Seriously, have you ever seen a horse swim?

Crafty In Guayama

Heading to Guayama for the craft festival of the Ingenious Artisans of Puerto Rico. Or something. I forget the actual name of their organisation.

Guyama is a classic southern plantation town, complete with Spanish-style plaza. Vintage PR right here. Strangely, there is a monument to deceased servicemen of Ohio in the town center. Why not.

Also pictured: improvised and hand-painted signage, vintage art deco movie theatre, and a piƱa colada prepared in an actual pineapple.

Supermarkets, lost in Translation

I was disappointed to see how Americanised the supermarkets of Puerto Rico have become. Perhaps because this edition of Pueblo was located in a largely tourist area near hotels in San Juan, but the shelves were stocked with mostly the same product selection as you might find in New Jersey.

There were, luckily, a few exceptions. I love taking pictures of supermarkets.

Mischa in London: 2008 edition

Mischa in London
a bemused-looking Mischa during our first trip to London in May 2000

Mischa texted me at 5:30 this morning:

“You can add No. 10 Downing St. to the list of places I’ve peed.”

International woman of intrigue, my sister.
