Joaquin Plays Piano

We braved the snow of Brooklyn to see Joaquin play the piano and entertain us during the brunch hour at the Manhattan Inn in Greenpoint. That about sums it up.

This being a recurring gig for Joaquin, it is most probable that I will find myself back there on weekend mornings, in spite of the terrible service and lack of skim milk.

Mum’s 60th Birthday

Home for a night to celebrate the 60th anniversary of my mother’s birth. Characters from her past were in affect, including my grandparents, her childhood friends, her college roommate, and family friends of various sorts. A lighthearted night, pleasantness all around.

Joaquin’s Freedom Pig

Nothing says Independence like an entire pig roasting over hot coals.

Or maybe it just has to more to do with spending a lovely afternoon with good friends, eating good food, and enjoying the outdoor simpleness of suburban New Jersey. These days, it is much rarer that we assemble at Joaquin’s house, and fittingly we commemorated the 27th anniversary of Joaquin’s birth along with the 233rd anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Red, White, and Blue cake eventually showed itself. As did rice and beans.

So to Messers Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Hancock, Bartlet, et al., here’s to you.

Joaquin Plays Piano’s

Joaquin, my ancient and most noble friend, has found himself part of another up-and-coming indy rock band, Kuroma. First, they opened for old Wesleyan pals MGMT in Prospect Park, and tonight headlined at Piano’s in the Lower East Side. And being the supportive best friend/fake cousin/brother from another mother, I turned out. In spite of smelly hipsters. In spite of crowds. In spite of the general annoying state of the LES. And I’m glad I did, in fact. Their music rocks.

Christmas at the Cotlers

I always seem to forget that the Cotler clan open their presents the night before Christmas, and thus I always seem to appear awkwardly to a room filled with children, wrapping paper, and screaming.

Exhale.

Mission Accomplished

After two years of official and unofficial campaigning, we awake this morning to an America that looks forward to it’s first black President. More than that, we look forward to the change and progress so desperately needed after four years of … well, tyranny, under Bush 43.

I feel as though a huge burden is finally lifted from my shoulders. The weight of the world now falls on Obama, although he’s got a lot of supporters to share the load. With wide-eyed optimism we face the future. The spectre of the past 8 years is all but exorcised. We have a renewed sense of pride.

America is back. And I am, at least for a little while, at peace.

Photos from my voting experience, and the post-announcement celebration at the Cotler house. Charlie was in attendance, as was Johanna and my parents, and many other parents of classmates and other from my +1 generation.

Adventures in Brooklyn

Joaquin called me up today and invited me to a BBQ in Bedford Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn. Since it was his birthday, and a nice day, and summer, and I haven’t seen him in a while, I naturally accepted the invite. Getting there, of course, would be the adventure.

After taking the J to the A and making a bit of a circuit around northern Brooklyn, I arrived. After meeting new faces, and greeting old ones, the day proceeded as normal. Hot dogs, and regular dogs (the pet kind), and chicken and ice cream and good music.

BBQs all around

Now that it’s officially Summer, ’tis the season for BBQs, weddings, and being lazy. No weddings this weekend but did manage to attend two dinners/BBQs with old friends.

To Joaquin’s house, this time in honour of Ezie, who finally earned himself a bachelor’s. To celebrate, a pig was roasted. Can’t argue with results. My family were all there, as was Charlie.

Josh Rouse in Warsaw

On a Friday night, we took the short journey to Warsaw in Greenpoint, where we pretended to be Polish all night long.

And Josh Rouse was there! And he rocked. With any luck, I’ve hooked Bonetti and Joaquin on his music.

The Night Before

For the first time, I think ever, my family decided to open the presents, and such, on Christmas Eve, rather than the following morning. While the pragmatic excuse is simply to accommodate Mischa and her ultra-bizarre work schedule, I kinda think we all agreed just so we could get on with our lives and have a normal night-followed-by-morning, free to be spent anywhere.

And so I fled to Joaquin’s house, where I arrived right in the middle of their opening of presents, and such, which they do every year of Christmas Eve. Joaquin and I sat down for a while and recorded an episode of twentyhood, which will be uploaded soon, I promise.

Good times. Note, these photos are a bit our of order, but I can’t be bothered right now.
