Scott and Melanie at The Ballet

A welcomed birthday gift, Melanie accompanied me on this Friday evening to see the New York City Ballet. Strangely, she had never seen a proper dance performance, so it was a bit of an education for her. I enjoyed seeing a live performance, which I hadn’t in many months, if not years. On tap was lots of Jerome Robbins choreography, including some 30s revival ballroom-cum-swing dancing, recreated from the film “I’m Old Fashioned.” Awesome.

We had excellent seats on what was altogether a pleasant evening.

Washington Square on my Birthday

Insert commentary about turning 29.

Met Laura and Julia for Thai food. Took photos as I sat in Washington Square Park.

Seriously, is it ever not Fashion Week? Brittany modeling again, and invited me to watch. And off they go.

No Longer Empty: Never Can Say Goodbye

After an exhausting week, I stepped out with Craig and Lisa to the grand re-opening of Tower Records for the Never Can Say Goodbye event, hosted by No Longer Empty, an arts advocacy group that revamps abandoned and closed spaces, often with an artsy twist.

Got to see old Drexel pals Naomi (who helped organise the event) and Sarah, with whom I used to dance.

While packed, the evening did show off some interesting music-themed artwork. Good stuff.

Lauren’s House

Through the snow and wind of January, I journey to Boston, for the wedding of grad school flatmate Nick, and his lady Karen. Lauren, my old high school chum, has graciously offered to put me up for the night, thus saving me the hassle and costs of staying a hotel, which I forgot to reserve anyway.

Lauren’s place is comfy, and distinctively female.

Scott and Leah Go Swing Dancing

In spite of the bitter chill of December, I managed to get Leah out for a bit of swing dancing. As expected, she’s a natural, and by the end of the night was moving like Ginger Rogers. Live music and Thai food made it a fun evening all around.

Class of 1999, Ten Years Later

An event ten years in the making, here reunited is Columbia High School’s class of 1999.

The event is strange for two reasons: First, I have had the privilege to remain very close with my high school friends. In general, I don’t refer to them as my high school friends, by merely as “my friends”, since I have only a handful of new friends gained in the ten years since. There’s only a few people from college I’m close to, and my grad school chums are scattered across the map. I’ve made a few new pals since working in New York, but generally, these old boys are the ones who stand beside me. And thus I’ve obviously been keeping up with them these many years.

Second, we live in the future. Between Facebook, MySpace, Email, IMs, and Twitter, it’s harder than ever to “lose touch” as it was in years of lore. I know who’s married and who’s single, who has children, who finished college, who visited Japan, who ran a marathon, who got fat, who looks exactly the same. And so seeing them isn’t a great shock. That and we’ve been seeing one another for ten years during those annual mini-reunions during the Thanksgiving holidays.

Still, this was anticipated, and in the end, a fun time was had.

First, to Eddie’s house. Then to Cryan’s. I’ve said that more times than I care to recount.

Halloween 2009, part I

The first night of Halloween finds us at Cotton’s house, right here in Jersey City. The old gang from high school appeared, and so did a few improvised costumes, including my own. Pleasantly absent were slutty costumes worn by giggly girls who are trying way too hard.
