Mum’s 60th Birthday

Home for a night to celebrate the 60th anniversary of my mother’s birth. Characters from her past were in affect, including my grandparents, her childhood friends, her college roommate, and family friends of various sorts. A lighthearted night, pleasantness all around.

Ian’s Birthday

It was late, but Kendra dragged me to LITM (sans Pete) to have a drink for Ian’s birthday. You can kinda see his head one of these photos.

Brett’s 30th

Imagine what would happen if someone organised a birthday party, but then didn’t show up until an hour and a half after the designated start time. Oh, that happened.

Eventually Bretty showed up to the join in the fanfare which was already underway at Kush. Hookas being smoked on, and that.

And while I certainly enjoyed hanging out in a crowded bar way past my bed time, it was the car ride home that really made the impression. Oddly, I found parking in short order, which is no small feat New York, let alone the Lower East Side, and managed to evade a ticket to boot. But on the way home, I discovered that the Holland Tunnel was closed. How did I discover this? Well, it involved a long queue of bumper-to-bumper traffic and eventually a makeshift barricade which has that lovely Newyorky way of say, “Sorry bro. You lose.”

Luckily, I know the area well and how to locate a porta-potty which is open at 3:00 in the morning. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

Dinner and Karaoke for my 28th

Once a year, I can harang my old friends into venturing east of the Hudson for an evening out in New York. This year, we headed to dinner at Havana NY before descending on Chorus for Karaoke shenanigans. Good clean fun.

The occasion was my 28th birthday, which technically doesn’t pass until Wednesday the 6th. We missed an organised shindig last year, so it was double-pleasant to see the old gang on my birthday. Thanks for coming out.

This was also the first time that I used Facebook to organise the event. I received something like 18 “maybe” replies, as well as 4 or 5 “yes” replies from people who didn’t show. So in the end I could have just made individual phone calls to all the people I would have expected to come. Shows you who your true friends are, I suppose. Next year, maybe I’ll use Mixergy.com or some other invitation service.

Many photos and videos, so make sure you check out the whole post.

I’m 27.

My father calls me this morning at 8:00 to wish me happy birthday. Nothing wrong with that except the fact that I was sleeping. I’m always amazed at how fast I can spring from sleep when the phone rings.

But yes, I’m 27. With the day nearly 10.5 hours old, I don’t feel any different, yet when I look at the number 27, it feels so large. I’m officially in my late-twenties and one more year has passed where I get to reflect upon feeling like I’m behind schedule in my life and career. Plus I don’t recover from rugby with the same quickness. I think that marathon kinda messed me up.

I always get a bit moody on my birthdays. If you’ve been paying attention, you would have known that. (26, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 18)

And yes, I will get to updating this site shortly, I have two months worth of photos to catch up on. And yes, I’m planning some sort of dinner/party later this month. And yes, I’m terribly lazy at planning social events.

Birthday Slaps

Ok, so it’s Johanna’s birthday, so what better way to celebrate than to attend a burlesque show and watch my little sister get slapped around by a naked chick. A good time was had by all.

Let me elaborate. We went down to Corio, a little establishment in SoHo, and watched the show. Not only did the show feature more skin than I expected, but also a lot more humour. The host, a cross-dressing lesbian named “Murray Hill”, had the audience entirely in stitches — even sober me!

We made it known fairly early that it was Johanna’s birthday and that the massive collection of well-dressed, good-looking young folks were her band. Eventually Johanna was asked to the stage to take a few smacks on the ass. Unfortunately I don’t have still photos of that, because I was shooting video (which I probably won’t post because it’s pretty explicit). These shots are mainly of Charles, who won an impromptu dance contest.

A Birthday Engagement

Matt Kushner, a friend from high school who I’ve reconnected with, had himself a birthday party/engagement party. So I headed over to say hello. Didn’t take all too many photos, but it was a fine evening all the same.
