With Sally Hogshead

With Sally Hogshead

In New York for long-overdue meeting with my long-time design hero, and current client, Sally Hogshead. The setting is Le Parker Meridien hotel in midtown, which is jammed with quirky architectural bits and bobs. Pictured here, random cathedral arches.

Violins on the Subway

Usually, I ignore subway performers, and dismiss them as a noisy interruption of my already noisy sequence of interruptions on my commute. But when two white boys with violins roll up, I think it’s worthy of removing my headphones. Very nice.

Craig & Lisa

Craig & Lisa, fresh from their move to New York, entertain me in their Chelsea lobby and elevator. Or as they call it, a lift. They don’t miss London yet, but they haven’t experienced a real winter yet either.

Brett’s 30th

Imagine what would happen if someone organised a birthday party, but then didn’t show up until an hour and a half after the designated start time. Oh, that happened.

Eventually Bretty showed up to the join in the fanfare which was already underway at Kush. Hookas being smoked on, and that.

And while I certainly enjoyed hanging out in a crowded bar way past my bed time, it was the car ride home that really made the impression. Oddly, I found parking in short order, which is no small feat New York, let alone the Lower East Side, and managed to evade a ticket to boot. But on the way home, I discovered that the Holland Tunnel was closed. How did I discover this? Well, it involved a long queue of bumper-to-bumper traffic and eventually a makeshift barricade which has that lovely Newyorky way of say, “Sorry bro. You lose.”

Luckily, I know the area well and how to locate a porta-potty which is open at 3:00 in the morning. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

Springtime in Union Square

On what has been the warmest day of the year so far, I found myself in Union Square, after a late lunch with friend and former co-worker Jen.

As usual, the perpetual circus that is Union Sq. was in full effect with the farmers and artisans out selling their wares.

Chemda’s Bartending Debut

Apparently, guest bar-tending is a thing people do, mainly on the East Side. Normally, it’s other bartenders who pop in to a new spot, with guests and friends in tow, but tonight, it was our pal Chemda who has never worked behind a bar in her life. Luckily, it was a Wednesday night, so not exactly CancĂșn during spring break.

Dinner and Karaoke for my 28th

Once a year, I can harang my old friends into venturing east of the Hudson for an evening out in New York. This year, we headed to dinner at Havana NY before descending on Chorus for Karaoke shenanigans. Good clean fun.

The occasion was my 28th birthday, which technically doesn’t pass until Wednesday the 6th. We missed an organised shindig last year, so it was double-pleasant to see the old gang on my birthday. Thanks for coming out.

This was also the first time that I used Facebook to organise the event. I received something like 18 “maybe” replies, as well as 4 or 5 “yes” replies from people who didn’t show. So in the end I could have just made individual phone calls to all the people I would have expected to come. Shows you who your true friends are, I suppose. Next year, maybe I’ll use Mixergy.com or some other invitation service.

Many photos and videos, so make sure you check out the whole post.

Brittany and Scott do New York

Or at least, we do lunch.

In town for a day, Brittany and I met to discuss, as usual, the daily grind of being a twentysomething, a struggling artist, looking for work, trying to pay rent, what friends are up to, and who exactly is that girl in the coffee shop (turns out it was Leticia from Beauty and the Geek).

In front of the Flatiron Building, my attempt at copying The Sartorialist. Clearly, Brittany wins the style competition, leaving me looking extra frumpy and put out. I swear, that coat usually makes me look quite dynamic and continental.
