In DUMBO

In DUMBO tonight, for the fifth anniversary of SwissMiss, the wonderful design blog-turned-community. As is evidenced by the photos, it was indeed a fun party. And rather silly.

Mum’s 60th Birthday

Home for a night to celebrate the 60th anniversary of my mother’s birth. Characters from her past were in affect, including my grandparents, her childhood friends, her college roommate, and family friends of various sorts. A lighthearted night, pleasantness all around.

KATG1000, part I

Like on previous occasions, I have packed my bags and bid adieu to metro New York to follow my friends Keith and Chemda on the road. This time around, they were commemorating the 1000th episode of their show, Keith and The Girl.

For such an occasion, we assembled at the Woodloch resort outside of Hawley, PA to take in the scenic calm of the Poconos, to relax, sleep, catch up with old friends, and eat some good food.

Oh, that was just me. Everyone else was there to get shit-faced.

First, we met for a rather fancy dinner, followed by a game of Bingo. Then, after being grown-ups for too long, we headed back to the houses for a bit of what’s become known as “Party Super Party!” Aime even convinced me to do a shot of something called a Grasshopper. I think the last time I did a shot it was when Jay’s mum harangued me into trying a Mini Beer. As the video will attest, I don’t really drink.

Shenanigans, as expected.

Brett’s 30th

Imagine what would happen if someone organised a birthday party, but then didn’t show up until an hour and a half after the designated start time. Oh, that happened.

Eventually Bretty showed up to the join in the fanfare which was already underway at Kush. Hookas being smoked on, and that.

And while I certainly enjoyed hanging out in a crowded bar way past my bed time, it was the car ride home that really made the impression. Oddly, I found parking in short order, which is no small feat New York, let alone the Lower East Side, and managed to evade a ticket to boot. But on the way home, I discovered that the Holland Tunnel was closed. How did I discover this? Well, it involved a long queue of bumper-to-bumper traffic and eventually a makeshift barricade which has that lovely Newyorky way of say, “Sorry bro. You lose.”

Luckily, I know the area well and how to locate a porta-potty which is open at 3:00 in the morning. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

Internet Week 2008: Tumblr Party

I don’t usually go out for social time on a Sunday night, but cmon, it’s Internet week. Tonight’s event is a Tumblr/Next New Network party down in that Tribeca-ish area that no one really lays claim to. Side note: when did everything below Houston become Chinatown? WTF.

Tonight’s even was fun. With the music and entertainment provided by a karaoke-style Rock Band exhibition, no one had reasons to complain about the DJ or the overall mood. After all, it was our friends on stage. And to my pleasant surprise, the ratios of male-to-female weren’t of the usual skew.

Made some friends, passed out some business cards, took some photos. Not bad for a Sunday night.

Internet Week 2008: Rocketboom Party

Luckily, I didn’t have to travel too far for tonight’s festivities. After rugby, and appropriate showering, I walked over to Savalas on Bedford for an evening of cool beats in an air conditioned bar. Not a bad time, although the usual awkwardness of being the sober guy did eventually overtake my desire to make new friends.

A Night at the Museum

Of all the unlikely party venues in New York, I think the Hall of Planets at the American Museum of Natural History takes the biscuit. Well, that’s where we found ourselves on this night. Hanging out with Anthea and Kaity of Update Graphics, the night was a change of pace all around, eventually listening to the sounds of DJ Jazzy Jeff and watching the massive crowds sway the whole place.

I wonder if I can rent out the Museum for a wedding reception, or something. It certainly has a sense of grandeur which I find adds to the entertainment.

By the way, February 29th!

Here’s some video to get a feel for the madness of the party. Photos after the jump:

Good Company, Terrible Sweaters

Now that I live in Brooklyn, I don’t get the chance to see my old friends as much as I’d like. Luckily, we have a new fixture on the social calendar. Scott Richardson, once again, hosted the annual Cheesy Holiday Sweater Party at his place.

All the old lot was there, so I thought why not bust out the camera. These days I am more reluctant to take pictures of us simply standing around holding cups. Then again, this is what parties become after a certain age, no?

By the way, Chris Pax, major faux paz for wearing the same thing two years in a row.

A Birthday Engagement

Matt Kushner, a friend from high school who I’ve reconnected with, had himself a birthday party/engagement party. So I headed over to say hello. Didn’t take all too many photos, but it was a fine evening all the same.

Hi Lauren!
